An innovative, closed-loop system that utilizes a two-stage sand, gravel, and 3D-printed zeolite filtration process to continuously purify and recycle water for sustainable public hand hygiene
The Material Bar Handwashing Station is a closed-loop hygiene installation for event participants that is created using a mixture of vernacular design approaches and experimental filtration techniques. The system is designed to allow water to continuously circulate through a two-stage loop so that users can wash their hands while actively engaging with sustainable water practices. The station’s continuous water flow draws attention to the installation and allows participants to easily interact with it without needing to operate manual "tippy taps." The hybrid filtration process, created by combining a gravel-and-sand sink basin with a transparent tube of zeolite absorbers, enables thorough purification of the water while also making it safe for continuous reuse. The internal water cycle is clearly visible, making it easy for users to observe the pump driving water through the purification stages in real time. Additionally, the station utilizes experimental 3D-printed zeolite designed with a differential growth pattern, which effectively increases the surface area for maximum absorption during filtration. This innovative solution ensures that public events have a reliable, circular system to sustain hygienic handwashing, benefiting both the event attendees and the environment.
